The lecture first present basics element on linear elastic fracture mechanics. In particular the Westergaard's stress functions and the William's expansion. The stress intensity factors and the T-stresses are introduced and their use for predicting crack growth is discussed. Then various effects related to the non-linear behaviour of the material are discussed, especially the history effects observed in fatigue crack growth and their consequences for fatigue life predictions. Finally the modeling of history effects in fatigue crack growth will be addressed.
